About Medina Township

Located in Lenawee County, Michigan, Medina’s open land, beautiful parks, and welcoming community offers all residents and visitors a relaxed, rural feel.

The first settlers arrived in Medina, Michigan on May 24, 1834. In January of 1836, the first township meeting was held. Mr. Rollin R. Hill was the first township Supervisor. In 1837 Medina Township was separated from Seneca and designated as a civil township. In the northeast corner of the township, the village of Canandaigua was established. A log store was built by Mr. Bushnell in Canandaigua accompanied by a sawmill in 1835. The first school was also held this year in a log cabin in Canandaigua located on a branch of the Tiffin River good water power existed for the settlers. The community developed and soon contained a hotel, three sawmills, and a manufacturer of carriages, hay racks, etc. The villages of Medina and Canandaigua were named after villages in New York.
